The BBC reckons they "broke" this story -http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7733760.stm - on 18th November even though you've had it on 15th October.

Seeing Stars

Posted by R Fee on Nov 12 2008 4:26PM

I recently received Andrew Pern's book as a gift and it's really terrific. Just a couple of comments on the article though - bad proofing - 'born and bread'? And I think The Star Inn is in Harome, not Whitby.

Word on the Highstreet: November 12th

November 12thYour fortnightly shopping news
To the Maxx As you may have noticed, there's a new giant in town. Well, not 'new' as such, because the TK Maxx which has just opened on the Headrow is an upgrade from their old site in the Leeds Shopping Plaza, but blimey, what an upgrade! With up to 60% off the retail price of most designer labels, there might finally be some decent competition for our ever-popular Primark, located just down the road. The winners, of course, are us lot, who get two floors of great clobber to get our greedy mitts on. Lewis Christmas Carol The Kath Libbert Jewellery Gallery at Salts Mill is a challenging proposition, designing alternative jewellery with a poignant artistic impression. Their 'Curiouser and Curiouser' themed exhibition, which runs until the end of January, will display jewellery from eig... Read more...

Garforth Town: November 12th

Your fortnightly news from the Genix Healthcare Stadium
Well, my prediction that Garforth Town were about to turn their sustained period of draws into victories proved to be half correct. Following the 1-1 stalemate three days earlier, The Miners hosted Romulus in the FA Trophy in what was an archetypal cup tie. ... Read more...

What do we love and loath?
Rate It 'Your Mum' jokes There's no better way to end any argument than with a perfectly timed "your mum" jibe. Just make sure no discerning adults are in the room at the time, especially not your mum. Preview: Death of a Salesman

There seem few plays more poignant in the current economic climate than Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman. Following the life of Willy Loman - both outwardly as his sons return to the family home, and inwardly as he remembers, and is overcome, by past experiences - the play addresses the American dream unequivocally. George Costigan (Rita, Sue... Read more...

Farsley Celtic: November 12th

All the news from Farsley Celtic AFC
Since last writing, a couple of editions ago, there has been much going on at Farsley. Manager John Deacey paid the price for a poor set of results and was surprisingly sacked, his assistant Neil Parsley, former manager of arch rivals Guiseley and Deacey's assistant was given a month to prove himself as candidate for the job. With assistant Mark... Read more...

Preview: Raising a Rumpus

Raising a RumpusLeeds Town Hall once again plays host to some of the finest British classical music performances for Leeds International Concert Season
The Mancunians are coming! Thankfully, they are here only to entertain us, which is perhaps as it should be. Manchester Camerata is one of the country's finest chamber ensembles and the music of the first Viennese School is their absolute bread and butter. A Haydn overture, a Mozart concerto and a Beethoven symphony adheres to a seemingly... Read more...

Life Of...: Claire Tooker

Claire TookerThis issue's reader of the fortnight Claire Tooker describes her Leeds week
Monday I'm the manager at Starbucks in The Light, so my Monday's are normally spent doing all the paperwork. But today I'm heading down to London for our annual Christmas conference and as it's my first Starbucks Christmas, I'm very excited! After I'd finished my paperwork, I went off to meet the rest of the Leeds management team and caught the... Read more...

Tried and Tested: Just Float

Just FloatWe float away at Just Float
I can't remember being in the womb, but I reckon I got a pretty close - though perhaps more pleasant - reminder on a cold weekday evening recently. Having walked past Just Float on North Street hundreds of times - the Leeds Guide office only a few doors down, as it is - my curiosity finally got the better of me and I booked a float. I made the s... Read more...

Alea Casino

Alea CasinoGambling in Leeds just got flasher
The recent surge in the popularity of online gambling seems to have encroached casinos' markets surprisingly little. All this talk of super casinos presumably illustrates that those that have preceded this proposed new breed (the "regular" variety, if you will) are managing to do more than subsist. Furthermore, judging by the fact that Leeds... Read more...

Golly Gok!

Golly Gok!Tess Eaton chats with the face of fashion himself, Gok Wan
Leeds Shopping Week 2008 ended with a bang at the opening of the new shopping destination, Clarence Dock. A week of shopping-fuelled activities became the perfect warm-up to a floating catwalk show and the appearance of, wait for it… Gok Wan! Clarence Dock is a brand-new shopping and residential area next to the Royal Armouries museum. Comprised... Read more...

Shu-ed Away

Shu-ed AwayJude Townend peeps into a magical beauty world
The staff rather reverentially refer to their late founder as Mr Uemura, in respect for the name that gave the world a new approach to skincare and make-up. Perhaps the Shu Uemura brand is best known for its decadent and fabulous fake eyelashes; the recent Viktor & Rolf collection - which featured extremely eye-catching scales and rhombuses -... Roger that...

Roger that...We take a break at Rogerthorpe Manor Hotel with some choice literature for company
We've been going round in circles for 20 minutes. The monstrous towers of Ferrybridge are looking on smugly (or should that be "smogly"?) as we rejoin the A1 for the third time. We're looking for Badsworth, a small village six miles to the south of Pontefract. More specifically, we're looking for the Rogerthorpe Manor hotel. This journey trouble... Read more...

Camp in Style

Camp in StyleSam Ward enjoys the wonders of the MyHab - a new, luxurious camping experience which looks set to transform any festival experience
I have an addiction to festivals. It all started at T in the Park a few years ago and has been gaining momentum ever since. It's the smell, the feeling you get as you first walk towards the main stage, the slightly warm beer, the sunshine and the rain, but more than anything, it's the luxury. I know what you're thinking, there's no luxury when it... Read more...

The Great Xscape

William Wood braves his first ski lesson
Skiing was always something I had associated with broken limbs, frostbite and the type of thrill-seeking people with whom I rarely spend a great deal of time. So it was with some trepidation that I accepted the offer of a lesson at SNO!zone, the indoor skiing and snowboarding venue at the Xscape complex at Castleford. Such initial uncertainty was...
